Make Your Own Custom Switch Cases

Updated: Aug 31, 2019

Many people love to collect Physical copies of games because they love the cases. The case is something you can own and hold, resell and admire the art work. But some games never receive a physical version. Fortunately there is a way to add a case for any game whether available in physical form or not. You will also be able to add cases for the DLC from many different games to your library as well.

Step 1 - Obtain Case Switch Case

You can purchase Switch cases on line from many vendors such as ebay, Amazon and even directly from Nintendo at the Nintendo Store. The cost of these in July 2019 is 5 cases for $7.99. Another cheaper solution is to ask a local game retailers for spare/empty cases that they use for marketing or for pre-orders. If they are headed to the trash you may even be able to score some of these for free.

Step 2 - Choose Cover Art

Once you have obtained your cases you need to find cover art. The cover art can come in one of three varieties.

  • Official artwork

  • Back Up Art Work

  • Fan Art

Official Artwork is often put out by various game publisher. You can find these on webiste like Nintendo Rewards Website. Nintendo has published covers for Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion, Octopath Traveller (eight separate versions), Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Three versions one for each house), Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order and Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country. Other Official publisher artwork is available online for games like Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus that has four alternate covers and The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim that I have seen two separate covers.

Back Up Art Work is available online by searching google. Web sites like the The Cover Project and GameTDB also provides a library of Art Work. You will need to download your art work to you PC. Fan Art also known as Fake Box Art can also be found online. These can be found for many digital only titles that never revived official art. If you can't find anything you like you can also make your very own artwork using one of the templates found online.

Step 3 - Print, Cut and Insert

Once you have selected the art work its time to print. High gloss paper will most closely replicate the original cover in addition the paper weight is important. Some sites recommend anywhere from a minimum of 20lb paper on up to about 80 lb paper. But my searches suggest a paper weight from 20 to 40 lb weight should be sufficient. Your printer should use a printer capable of at least 300ppi to provide decent resolution of the images.

The final art work will be about 1572 x 1218 pixels in size (208mm wide by 161mm) however most cover art will be provided in a slightly larger and you will need to cut it down to this size using trim marks which is common in printing. These trim marks (or crop marks) show the printer where to cut the paper. Once you cut it to size insert it into your case.

Step 4 - Enjoy

Now you can add your new game cases to your collection and you can enjoy them! Then feel free to brag about your unique collection to other collectors. You can show off collection and creations in our fourm.
