Matching Game Versions - Local Transfer - Can Help in the Long Term Preservation of Game Cards

Updated: Sep 1, 2019

One of the fears of collectors is they will have a game card that requires update and the internet will no longer allow you to update. Fortunately the Nintendo Switch has a feature that could help in the Long Term Preservation of Game Cards. The "Local Transfer" feature in the Software Update will aid collectors far into the future by allowing the transfer of game updates to the new owner of a game card. If places like Game Stop are smart they would figure out how to capture the updates on a master switch and when a Game Card is bought the user can down load it to their local machine independent of if Nintendo Servers are still offering game updates.

Fortunately this the software update for each game is real easy to perform. Each game has a Software Setting called "Match Version with Local Users". Simply go into this setting. Get all Switch units that wish to transfer data to all onto this start screen and then start a "group" on the primary Switch. Next all the all other Switch units can join this "group". When the group is ready the primary Switch can start sending data upon choosing the "Start Communication" button. Upon starting the process a "Updating Software" screen will indicate that data is transferring and show you the time remaining. It will also have an icon for each switch that is reviving or sending data. After this short transfer via WiFi you will not have the same software version on both units without ever connecting to the Nintendo servers.

For those that wish to see a video of how this software update is performed please watch this video from Jody's Backlog.

I can see this feature being very important in the far future when Nintendo stops supporting the Switch and stops providing game updates. This feature can help persevere games with poor "Legacy Scores" (see chart below). I can see collectors who will be able to transfer important game updates when a Physical Switch Game Cards is sold and therefore I see this as an essential process in the long tern preservation of Switch Game Cards. Who knows maybe even a game shop could for a small fee allow users to come on in and update their game collection at the same time as providing a free update to all their Physical Game cards sales.

At least we don't have to worry about this until Nintendo shuts off the servers that supply game updates but it's nice to know we have options for all the games that have anything other then an "A Legacy Score". Do you see any other good uses of this feature? What about DLC? Add your comments to the discussion below.
